Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24 1972 at Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for the arts and her creative side. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater during daylight hours. DuVernay fell in love with the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt recommended her to DuVernay. DuVernay recognized that art is a powerful tool to promote activism. DuVernay was raised by her mother who was aware of her social circle and taught her to utilize the arts as a way of expressing herself. DuVernay spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and was raised. The father of DuVernay's mother recalled protests for civil rights that took place on the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the Selma town that was nearby, Alabama. DuVernay visited Selma during the summers and was later in awe of the idea to film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. In 1990, she was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood CA. DuVernay began producing television news as a young student. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay was assigned to the monitor and investigate the residence for a specific juror. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism so she decided to shift her focus towards the field of publicity. DuVernay was immediately hired out of college as an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. From this position she started her own company for public relations called The DuVernay Agency in 1999.
